Overview: This is my Review for teh 2005 Remake of Area 88. Originally Area 88 was a 3 part OAV, I think it was na hour per part. This was made in 1980's. The Remake is a 12 part series and I have to say, they did a good job at doing this.
Shin Kazuma, the main character, was tricked into joining a merchinary squad, being forced to serving a 3 year contract, or pay $1.5 million. The Story revolves around two characters actually, Shin and Makoto Shinjo, a photographer who was allowed onto the Secret base known as Area 88. None of the pilots know why he is there exactly and all have there ideas.
Characters: The Characters where well done, and the emotion and tragidy of each sucks you in. Shin was looking to be the best pilot for Yamato Airlines, and everything looked like it was going to work out. He was about to get married to Ryoko, a girl he feel in love with at first sight. One night he goes out drinking with his friend, Kanzaki only to be tricked into signing a form, that cause him to be shipped to Area 88. Shin now trys to earn the 1.5 million that will send him home, and as you find out he's the only one that looks able to do it!
Shinjo, the other main character, is a photographer, and he was asked to take a picture. At first, you don't know but you get a few hints as to what. He follows Shin around, getting on his nervous many times throughout the series. Later you find out, that his 'job' gets harder and harder as he becomes closer to all the personel on the base. It ends with what he was meant to do, out to the base and everyone pissed off at him.
Kanzaki, is Shin Kazuma's 'best friend'. He tricked Shin into going to the hell known as Area 88, to get where Shin was going, and to get Ryoko.
There are more Character's, and if I listed each of there roles, this would go on for a while.
Plot: Confusing, cause you get nothing at the beginning to really work with. But that's what gets you coming back for more each time. It leaves you on the edge of your seat, wondering if Shin will ever get home to Ryoko, and What is Shinjo's picture he needs to take. There are many suprises, many I weren't expecting.
Animation: For being an Anime, They did a really really good job at this. They got as close as they could to realism, while sticking true what it most animes are. The Air Fights are the best i've seen in any anime, and that's saying a lot. YOu could tell they put some time into this. There are some odd ends that should be fixed but that's pushing it.
Summary: If you are into Anime, and want a new Series to watch, Check this out. I recommend it for anyone really. With it's intense Air Combat Scenes to the Emotional Story aside from that, it's got something for almost any Anime Fan.
Overall 9.4/10 - The odd ends that need to be fixed where the only real problem. Honostly, I've watched to many animes I can catch small mess ups.
